Mumford & Sons, New Jobs, ZOMBIES.

So time has completely gotten away from me. The last month has been pretty hectic. My freelance writing has kind of blown up (I have another column I’m writing for Nooga.com, plus some side projects), I started a new job this week and, oh yeah,

I SAW MUMFORD & SONS IN CONCERT ON TUESDAY.

My friend Stephanie and I headed down to Atlanta in the early afternoon. The concert was at Centennial Olympic Park, and we managed to find an open lot RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. We parked and decided to walk to Vortex to get a bit to eat. It was about 2 miles one way and let me tell you, the burger was worth the 4 mile walk. SO GOOD. After lunch, we headed back to the park to see a line had already formed to get in. Crap! It wasn’t too bad, and we were pretty confident we’d still get good spots. We did.

Oh my God, y’all. It was more amazing than I can explain. Each song was amazing. They played “Dust Bowl Dance”, where Marcus Mumford played the drums and near the end of the song, he just lost his damn mind and threw his drumsticks away and kicked the whole drumset over before going to the front of the stage and finishing the song. It was so freaking cool, I just started screaming like a crazy person. One of the highlights of the show (aside from “Timshel”, “I Will Wait”, “Lover’s Eyes”, and their finale, “The Cave”… Okay so pretty much the whole damn thing) was after the road crew set the drumset back up after “Dust Bowl Dance”. The band came back out and with them came their opening acts, Bear’s Den and The Vaccines. They all played “Come Together”, and it was FLIPPING. AWESOME. I found this video on YouTube, which doesn’t do it justice but is still pretty good.

SO MANY MUMFORDS

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the concert since Tuesday. It was an amazing day with a great friend. We got home super late, and the next day I started a new job. What! Yes, last week I left the job I’d had for the past three years for a new opportunity. I’m enjoying the new job very much, and am happy to report that it is something brand new and very challenging. One of the best parts is that I get to work on a Mac and I am learning Photoshop. WEEEE!!!

I’m gearing myself up for tomorrow. What is tomorrow, you ask? Oh, just a little thing called RUN FOR YOUR LIVES. Yeah, IT’S HERE ALREADY. What? How did that happen? I swear it was like, yesterday that I first blogged about it. WTF. Anyway, please send good RUN BITCH vibes my way and hope that I make it through the race with a survivor medal? I will keep you posted on how it goes. Halfway to Thirty: A Twenties Bucket List Update

So back in January, just after my birthday, I wrote this post about making a “Twenties Bucket List”; a list of things I wanted to do before turning 30.

I’m happy to report that I have crossed off several of the things on the list and have several more items on my calendar so they will be happening later this year. Here’s a quick update:

  • Take a winery tour. – I did a wine *tasting* in March so… I’m gonna cheat and cross this off.
  • Attend Wine Over Water (not everything on this list is wine-related. Promise). – This event hasn’t happened yet.
  • Lose 40 pounds. – I’m almost there: I’m down 27 pounds.
  • Begin writing a book. – Er… Nope. Not yet.
  • Take 1 photo a day and make a “memory yearbook” at the end of the year. – I screwed the pooch on this one.
  • Begin saving for a family Disney trip. – Kind of?
  • Take a weekend road trip with the family. – No, but we DID go to Chicago for a whole week in the early summer.
  • Meet some of my blog friends in person (FINALLY). – :( Not yet. But I did get to meet two other people who write for Nooga (and we had a blast at karaoke), so maybe that counts?
  • See a live concert (preferably Mumford & Sons or Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros). – YES. I did see Edward Sharpe, and am seeing Mumford & Sons next month.
  • Do something completely different with my hair. – YUP. Take a look.

BEFORE AND AFTERBYE BYE, HAIR.

  • Run a 5k. – I ran the Color Me Rad (didn’t run the WHOLE thing but I ran most of the way) in March. Mentioned that I wanted to do the Run For Your Lives 5k, which I’m doing next month (if you’re planning on doing one, don’t forget you can get 15% off using my special Zombie Prep Team code of ZPTD10).

Okay so looking at the list there aren’t quite as many things crossed off as I originally thought, but that’s okay. I’ve made good progress and am exciting about the things that are still to come. Also? The thought of chopping my hair off was scarier than the actual chopping itself. Once my stylist made the “point of no return” snip, I was strangely calm about the whole thing. I’m not sure if I was in shock or what, but I was totally fine with her hacking off most of my hair.

Five months ’till 30. Lets see if I can get more of this bucket list taken care of by then!

 

Chicago, Concerts, ALL THE THINGS

Well, this is the longest I’ve gone without blogging here, I think. Like… Ever. It feels weird even typing; I feel almost estranged from my blog. No hard feelings, blog… Things have just been busy.

I’m still writing for Nooga.com, which takes up a lot of my free writing time and honestly a lot of my creative energy. My family and I went up to Chicago at the end up May for a glorious ten-day vacation to celebrate my brother’s wedding. We drove and it took a long time. The drive was pretty easy, though, so that was great!

I returned to Chicago last weekend for my little cousin’s wedding. Weddings forever! I have some great pictures to share of both occasions but will post those later.

I’m hoping to slowly get back into the swing of blogging here. I’ve got a few other freelance things that I’m juggling so when I come home and have time to do those things, it’s tough to find the energy to write here. I’ve got a new project coming up on the blog, though, so keep your eyes peeled! I’m really excited about it. I’ll give you a hint; it involves zombies. YAY ZOMBIES!

A few other highlights from life lately; I got to see Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros in concert! To be perfectly honest, I was a little disappointed but the opening band – He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister – were INCREDIBLE. Speaking of concerts, I GOT MUMFORD & SONS TICKETS FOR SEPTEMBER. OH. MY. GOD. That happened. I’M GOING!

I’ll post more later on this week, mostly talking about the new project I’m involved in.

 

After a Month of Silence…

It feels kind of weird blogging after almost a month of silence. It’s not that I haven’t had anything to talk about – by all means, I should really be writing something pretty much every other day – it’s just that I haven’t really felt like it.

I have been busy. I am going to the gym almost 5 days a week. When I leave work, I go before I head to Nellie’s daycare to scoop her up. Three days a week I do Couch to 5k and crunches/arm exercises and the other two days I usually do the elliptical machine. It’s funny, I’ve always hated running but since I started seriously getting into C25k, I have found myself actually looking forward to it. Once I got past the pain in my legs the first week and a half, I found my rhythm and my stride and kind of morbidly enjoy killing myself on the treadmill. I’m on Week 4 now, which alternates 3 minutes of jogging/2 minutes walking with 5 minutes of jogging and 90 seconds of walking…. I think… All I know is the first time I tried I quit after the first 5 minute run, because I thought I was going to throw up. I felt nauseated for a half an hour afterward. But on my second attempt, I did it. My shins are a little achey so I’m taking the weekend off and will start day 2 on Monday.

I’m down 11 pounds so far since beginning counting calories on December 17th, and joining a gym on January 15th. It’s a little slower than I’d like (even though it evens out to about a pound a week) and I have to keep reminding myself that I’m not in any hurry to lose this weight. It is frustrating to be busting my ass and still not be seeing huge results in the way my clothes fit yet. I have to keep reminding myself that in the past, it’s been more like 15 pounds when I begin seeing a difference on my body. Now, I can tell a difference in the way I feel. I have been sleeping better, can play harder with Nellie, and don’t feel like I’m about to drop dead when I haul her around. Yay!

My heart isn’t really in this post so I’ll end it here. I have more to say – last weekend I made an impromptu solo trip to Chicago to see my family so there’s a lot to tell about that – but I’m not really feeling it right now.

Twenties Bucket List

For my birthday, my best friend gave me a number of really cool and funny things. She gave me a Starbucks gift card, a funny calendar featuring goats in trees (best ever, right?), some scented wax that smells like cupcakes (“so the calories don’t ruin your diet”) and a card with some wonderfully sentimental things written inside.

One of the things she wrote was how we should do lots of fun things this year and then throw a big party for the big 3-0. I wonder if she knew she’d make me cry with her card (the sweet things she said, not the fact that she mentioned me turning 30) but I’m almost positive she didn’t know that she’d inspire me to create what I’m calling  my “Twenties Bucket List” – a list of things I want to do before my twenties kick the bucket and become my 30s.

It’s probably going to be a list in progress, because I keep thinking of random and silly things to put on it. I don’t think the #1 item will change, however. Here is the list as it stands now in no particular order except for item #1:

  • Take a winery tour.

Train for and run a 5k.

Specifically, the Run For Your Lives Zombie-Infested 5k Obstacle Course Race in September. What’s that? Check out the video below for epic awesomeness.

I mean seriously. How freaking cool does that look? I just can’t decide if I want to be a zombie or a racer. Obviously it’s going to take me more than just training in running – that shit looks serious. I’m going to have to be in good shape before tackling that but I have plenty of time since the run isn’t until September.

That’s my Twenties Bucket List so far. I’m determined to make the last year before 30 awesome.
